Voters go the polls across Broxbourne on Thursday May 7th 2026
In 2025 the Leader of the Opposition referred to the Lib Dems as "The party that fixes the Church Roofs". Kemi Badenoch meant it as an insult but there is a good deal of truth in the statement. The Lib Dems are a grassroots party and Lib Dem Councillors focus on delivering a fair deal for voters across the communities they serve.
Broxbourne District Council Elections
The last set of Broxbourne District Council elections on May 7th are particularly important for Broxbourne voters. Next year, Hertfordshire County Council and 10 District Local Authorities will be replaced by two, three, or 4 Unitary Councils. The Government will announce the New Unitary Councils, which will deliver all services, this summer when the Transition Period begins.
District Councillors must use the transition period to
- Ring-fence local service levels (e.g., frequency of bin collections), ensuring they are not replaced by inferior standardised service levels within a larger unitary authority as a consequence of a poorly managed transition.
- Ensure that a sense of local identity is maintained after the transition. The Lib Dems favour creating Town Councils for Hoddesdon and Cheshunt and devolving powers to maintain community assets such as playgrounds, allotments and green spaces. They also favour granting Town Councils the power to develop neighbourhood plans approving design standards and the location of homes and shops in the area.
- Lock in Developer Commitments to fund adequate infrastructure for the massive Rosedale Estate. Build out is well underway but there is not yet a binding agreement with the developers to provide local services. Consequently, new residents must rely on existing surgeries and schools within Goffs Oak and Cheshunt which are already oversubscribed. This is completely unacceptable and must be remedied before the transition is complete.
- Oppose any further large scale developments within the Borough without a binding legal agreement to provide necessary infrastructure, such as GP surgeries.
Since 2024 the Conservatives running Broxbourne Council have been plagued by defections to Reform UK at both District and County levels, including Flamstead End Councillor Giles Hall who defected to Reform in February 2025. Electors will need to decide whether they wish to elect councillors from a Party that is breaking up and drifting further to the right or from a stable grassroots party focused on delivering a fair deal for voters across the community.
County Council By-election: Flamstead End and Turnford
A County Council By-election will also take place on May 7th caused by the resignation of Tony Hill (Reform UK).
The Liberal Democrat-led Hertfordshire County Council approved a £1.2 billion budget focused on a "Fair Deal for Herts" to begin correcting 25 years of Conservative neglect in transport and education. For voters in the Flamstead End and Turnford Division this will mean:
- A significant share of the increased Roads and Pavements Budget will fund local road maintenance projects. This includes improving drainage on the A1170 to eliminate surface water pools that become hazardous during heavy rain and clearing drains and gullies on Longfield Road in Flamstead End to allow rainwater to run off readily.
- The County Council will continue the "Pothole Surge," redirecting funds to clear the repair backlog by resurfacing road surfaces rather than using the short term fix of "Patch and Mend." Soon, it will be possible to navigate Brookfield Lane West without risking damage to your car.
- The Council has allocated £1.5 million to roll out nearly 200 new 20mph zones wherever residents approve them. Turnford's residential roads are high on the priority list for these safety measures to curb speeding near local primary schools.
- The Council is funded to expand the Herts Lynx (Dial a Ride) service into the Division to allow better access to Broxbourne and Cheshunt Stations where scheduled bus services have become infrequent
- This will benefit many local children and their parents who now face long daily "School Runs" to schools outside Broxbourne.
David Payne, the Lib Dem County Council Candidate for Flamstead End and Turnford supports the County Council's plan to put voter safety and well-being at the heart of its work.
If elected, all Lib Dem Councillors pledge to attend all Council meetings and report back to voters regularly.
